Fairfield University-Underground Utilities Relocation

Fairfield, CT

Modern Mechanical Systems completed the underground utility piping at the Fairfield University Villages project. The high temperature hot water and chilled water from the central utilities facility required relocation to accommodate construction of a new apartment building and the existing underground piping was deteriorating. Forty-five hundred feet of 16" to 6" welded, jacketed piping was installed servicing four existing buildings and the new apartments. Five welders burned 1,000 lbs. of rod over a period of three months to complete the project. Testing and backfill of sections was required to maintain traffic and construction of the new facility. Temporary piping and a portable chiller kept the university operating while the existing piping was removed and the new installed and put into service.
